Technical Updates

The season is rapidly approaching. We are six weeks away from opening night in Granite City.

Here is a list of technical updates to the 2016 Neal Tire MOWA Sprint Car Series presented by Casey’s General Stores Race Procedure Manual.

1. Kingpin tethers are recommended until July 26, 2016. After July 26, 2016, they will become mandatory for competition. That gives you until Speedweek to have them purchased and installed.

2. Wicker bills on the top wing are allowed to be a maximum of two inches – a change from one inch in 2015.

3. Front axle tubing is to be steel with a recommended 2 3/8″ diameter x .095 wall thickness. Note the word “recommended.”

4. Front axle tethers are recommended for 2016 – they will become mandatory in 2017.

5. SNELL 2005 rated helmets are no longer legal – they are outside of the 10-year window. SNELL 2010 and SNELL 2015 are the required ratings for all helmets.

6. Safety harnesses must have an expiration date within two (2) years. Upon discovery of an out of compliance safety harness, the race team will be given one (1) calendar week to fix the deficiency. Race teams that have been issued a deficiency slip that are still not in compliance will not be allowed to compete.

7. The HOOSIER 105/18.0-15 W18 will be available as an option, added to the current list of available tires.

8. In co-sanctioned events, the minimum point value for participation for licensed MOWA competitors is reduced from 75 points to 50 points. Drivers still keep any additional points that they earn above 50 points.

9. If you have the opportunity to purchase an AMB / Mylaps transponder, you may want to do so. We will have AMB transponders available at each event as we transition to electronic timing and scoring.

10. No slip tubing is allowed on Butt Bar in chassis construction. If this is present, it must be replaced, welded, or bolted using a 5/16″ grade 8 bolt.

Race format changes are currently under discussion and will be released at a later date.

If you’re a smaller team looking at this saying to yourself “What do I need” versus “You’re breaking my race team with a bunch of extra costs” – you need Kingpin tethers by Speedweek. You need Axle Tethers by next season. You need to check your safety harness. Everything that we are recommending or requiring is something that you will be required to have at other sanctioned events in the area.

As always, thank you all for your continued support and we’ll see you at the track.
